Description
Some twenty years ago, few people would've thought that Airbus Industries would've been a serious competitor to either Boeing's 737 or McDonnell Douglas' DC9 (including the resulting MD80 line). Both manufacturers and their associated products dominated the single-aisle, short to medium range market. The A320 changed all that.
My opinions aside, they were on to something. Fly-by-wire, a highly computerized flight deck, and a rather fuel-efficient design were game changers, especially in the US where a post-deregulation market saw cost-savings emerge as the single most important factor for airlines. Before long, the A320 and the A319 (the shortened variant) were supplanting Boeings and Douglases around the world. To date, both remain Airbus' most delivered commercial airliner.
When I saw the results of this night shot of a UAL A319 holding short of a runway that its company's A320 was lined up on, the title "1920" popped in my head, Initially, it was a humorous attempt to quiz my fellow plane spotters (Can you get WHY I named it that?), but it soon developed into a serious name for a print of two very successful machines that the traveling world will be using for a very long time.
