Description
Some planes have earned their place in reverence, and the B-17 Flying Fortress is a supreme example of this thinking. Many a pilot will acknowledge its contributions in the terrible days of World War 2, where it fought in both the European and Pacific theaters, and it's not a stretch to think that most of them would acknowledge it's greatness as a solid combat aircraft.
In 2000, I visited Napa Airfield to catch a glimpse of a surviving Flying Fort. Collings Foundation maintains an airworthy example (44-83575) where the public can either look over this fine aircraft on the ground, or even pay for the priviledge of taking a ride back in time as a passenger in it. It is painted in the colors of "Nine O Nine", a B-17 that never lost a crewman in the 140 missions that it flew. In this photo, the crew have just fired up the Number 2 engine while a ground tech keeps a watchful eye from the outside.
