Description
For better than 40 decades, it's plied the skies, established new standards to follow, and reigned supreme as the biggest commercial airliner ever built. It's utterly recognizable from a distance, served as something as a pseudo-star in many a movie, and dominated the long-haul travel market around the world.
But all good things must come to an end, and such is unfortunately the case for the 747. The A380 finally overtook the size and capacity records in 2005, and it's sibling, the 777 has slowly yet surely gained greater favor due to its ability to do almost the same job with far greater efficiency. Many airlines are phasing out the venerable Jumbo Jet from passenger service, and while the Cargo version still soldiers on strong, even its future is now in doubt.
That's what I had in mind as I earmarked this photo of two -400s, still the most popular versions of the type, for sale. A China Air Cargo freighter, prominent in the foreground, flares for landing while the passenger version for United Airlines in the background waits its turn. All at once, I thought it captured the essence of the mighty size and grace of the 747, and how it's now taking second place in the world of aviation. But many fans will always consider it the Queen Of The Skies, despite what reality's say is in the matter.
