Description
It's been years since United Airlines celebrated its 85th birthday with the unveiling of "A320 Friend Ship", an A320 painted in their 1970's "Friend Ship" livery (one of two that existed, actually), and fortunately for fans of the paint job, it continues to ply the skies. I happen to be one of them. Besides being a unique, one-of-a-kind scheme that stands out from the crowd, there's just SOMETHING about it that is far more lively than the current Post-Continental livery.
Perhaps it has something to do with the era that the ol' "Stars and Bars" (a common nickname) pays homage to. I (let me out myself on my age here) have very fond memories of when airline food in ALL classes were served on plates, child wing pins were metal, and the seats in coach in some ways put many of today's domestic first class ones to shame. It was a time when airline cabin crews seemed to have more manpower to take their time with their passengers, and cockpit crew members had the ability to step into the cabin to say hello. The 70s were a wonderful combination of new technology coupled with old-school values.
I know. Move on "grandpa"! Haha.
In short, "Friend Ship" is a bright reminder of yester-year, which is why I LOVE this shot I recently obtained of ol' N475UA! The Airbus is brilliantly illuminated against a dark sky, so much more than the A321 in the background that is beginning its takeoff run! IT STANDS OUT... much like my memories of what airline service USED to be!
