Description
It looks robust, it's speed is nothing to sneeze at, and it had the armament to give an enemy a moment of pause. Just it's 5-bladed prop gives the aura that this is not a plane to mess with, and that is not far from the truth. Although conceived as an air superiority fighter, the British high brass saw enough potential in the design to also commit it to a ground attack role.
I'll go on a limb and say that it was appropriately named.
Built a little too late for World War 2 in which it was intended to serve, the Hawker Sea Fury was a replacement for Great Britain's aging carrier aviation assets. It saw service in the Korean War in which at least one was credited with shooting down a MIG-15, and was chosen by several countries for military servicewith their air arms. While it's military life was relatively short, quite a few found their way into the civilian sector, where a few continue to ply the skies as air racers or heritage aircraft.
Such is the case of Sander Aviation's NAVY 924, which made an air show appearance in Sacramento. On this camera pass, I definitely got a sense of the plane's speed potential.
