Description
For decades, it has been the ONLY airworthy example of its type. Ongoing public support and tender loving care from those tasked to maintain her have ensured it, much to the delight of a massive fan base. Twice, I have seen the crowds flock to see this singular sensation... and on this last visit, I truly understood what the fuss is about.
She is "Fifi", a Boeing B-29 Superfotress. Rescued from China Lake Weapons Center bombing range in 1971, she was painstaking restored to her current glory and took to the skies in 1974. Since then, the has primarily toured the air circuit with the Commemerative Air Force while occasionally making a TV or movie appearance.
This picture was snapped at Wings Over Houston, and shows "Fifi" making a pass over the crowd while a company CAF P-51 passes by. Considering that Mustangs regularly escorted Superfortresses on bombing missions back in WW2, it seemed rather fitting to have the pair together in the frame. It also gives me a sense that the P-51 actually protecting the B-29, which would actually make perfect sense if it was the case. For now, Fifi is a one of a kind treasure, meant to be guarded for future generations to enjoy.
