Description
It's a dramatic sight to witness a jet light it's afterburners. The simple act of dumping raw fuel directly into the engine's tailpipe creates in inevitable glow of fire that, in this post-Concorde world, is not something often seen. As far as I know, this ability to "light the fire" is currently reserved to military jets.
Recently, a quartet of Super Hornets stayed at San Francisco, and I happened to be at the right spot when this "Rhino" of VFA-122 Flying Eagles departed. I've never been this close when a jet went to afterburner, and it was a sight that quickened my pulse. The waves of visible distortion all over the aircraft are from the hot exhaust gases being blasted out the nozzles of the twin General Electric F414-GE-400 turbofans. A friend of mine recently commented how that visible effect made it seem like he could almost "feel the heat".
