Description
Ironically enough, the plane that would become the legendary fighter built by was initially was a mediocre machine. Built to specifications for export to Britain, the Mustang Mk I was equipped with the Allison V-1710, which while a fine powerplant, did not give the airframe the performance it needed. It wasn't until the British mated the Rolls Royce Merlin engine that the North American design turly reached it's full potential
Many people claim that the P-51 Mustang was the plane that made the bombing campaign over Nazi Germany possible. It's extraordinary range allowed it to be the first single engine American fighter that could escort heavy bombers all the way to their target and back, and it's performance was superior to most things the Luftwaffe threw at it, especially at high altitude. Some of the best known WW2 pilots, such as George Preddy Jr., Bud Anderson, Chuck Yeager, flew the P-51.
In this image, two Mustangs swoop out of a dive at a local airshow. The one on the left is a P-51D survivor dubbed "Double Trouble Two" while its right-hand counterpart, "Bum Steer" is a TF-51. Both are excellent surviving examples of one of the finest aircraft ever to take to the skies.
