Description
Few things make me feel quite as alive as being on an airplane that is taking off. You're hurtling down the runway, engines screaming incredibly loud. The cabin (or if you're lucky, the cockpit) first starts to tremble, then shake as the airspeed builds. For those who love flying, it's exciting stuff, creating a build up of emotions that reaches a crescendo one you hit that magic number. It's at that airspeed when the nose comes up, the wings bite into the air, and... without all the rattling of all that barreling-barreling-down-the-runway, things suddenly get a lot more quiet!
That's when you're airborne. And whatever side of the how-you-feel-about-flying crowd you're on, that resulting emotion peaks. For me, it's a few seconds of marveling at technology doing it's thing, being thankful for all those in aviation (past and present) for making it possible, and enjoying the act of taking flight.
That's the moment I caught when I photographed this Boeing 757. What makes me think it's THE photograph in my collection that perfectly captures that sense of speed! Shot at a low shutter speed, everything is a blur around the aircraft as it climbs for the skies. It's a rush, both figuratively as well as literally!
