Artist's Description

Of all the phases of a flight, the landing is most likely to hold a passenger's attention. In watching the thousands of people I've flown with, it's that time when their senses are ratcheted up. Smooth ones are greeted with smiles and applause while rough ones will net frowns and gasps. No other time will a planeload of people be wide-eyed critics as that moment when the wheels make contact with the ground.

The landing of this airliner was fairly firm, as the smoke bursting up towards the fuselage indicates. From a pilot's perspective, I prefer such solid landings as the tires have an immediate grip on the asphalt and braking kicks in quickly. But I have to wonder what the scorecard was amongst the hundreds of passengers aboard this flight on the touchdown.
