Description
It's technical name is the Prandtl–Glauert singularity, aka a Vapor Cone. In casual terms, when the speed and humidity conditions are right, condensation can form around the shockwaves of air formed by the object in question and make them visible. But I digress; What matters is that when a plane creates a vapor cone, it's a moment that will make aviation enthusiasts hoot and holler and giggle like little kids. Even non-fans of aviation will blink and gawk and wonder what they heck it was that they just saw.
Such was the case during the demo of a VFA-122 Super Hornet. If the announcer was accurate, this plane was pushing a mind-boggling 700 mph during his fly by of the crowd. This was the only Vapor Cone of the day, and initially, I was disappointed about the sky conditions. But on closer inspection, I couldn't help but notice how the 'Rhino" just seemed to be exploding out from the gray overcast.
