Description
For over a year, I've been tracking a certain Boeing. Air New Zealand dubbed it "The Desolation Of Smaug, but in aviation circles, it's simply known as "Smaug". Ol ZK-OKO (it's registration) certainly catches the eye - one cannot help but notice that a giant dragon adorns the side of the airliner. It's truly a one of a kind paint job.
But in photographing it, I found myself faced with challenges. Obviously, I wanted to catch a profile shot of it, not easy considering the great length of the 777-319ER, and I have many such shots in my collection. But none of them seemed to work. Something crucial was missing, and I couldn't put my finger on it.
Until today.
With the dark skies that covered most of San Francisco today, I suddenly realized that I had the missing ingredient to the shot. Smaug is the antagonist in the latest of the series of the Lord Of The Ring films, oozing a menacing dark aura wherever he does - the clouds today cast that kind of atmosphere in the air as he sailed in for landing; it was a bonus that he provided such sharp contrast for the main subject. Add in a momentary stab of sunlight to brilliantly highlight the dragon'esque Boeing and I saw that I had the shot I was hunting for all this time.
