Description
Watching a B-17 take to the air is always an emotional moment. The airframes still flying are pushing (if not outright) 70 years of life since they rolled off the production lines. They went through decades of use, much of which might've fallen outside of their intended purpose. I've heard of surviving Forts seeing use as airliners, target drones, fire tankers, etc. One hauled meat for years in South America, and it took that long for the restorers to get rid of the stench!
And yet, they keep on flying, largely through the dedicated efforts of men and women with a passion to keep it that way. It's a lot of hard work, endless hours wrenching on the plane to maintain airworthiness, and an equall tiring job to raise the necessary money to pay for that maintenance. But every volunteer I've spoken to says it's all worth it each time those wheels break ground.
This B-17G is airframe 44-85740, civilian registration N5017N, operated by the Experimental Aircraft Asosciation under the name of "Aluminum Overcast". Proceeds from sales of this print will be donated to that organization.
