Description
I have the greatest respect for the engineers that made the planes that surround me at work. So many moving parts, each doing their respective thing, the collective whole working perfectly in unison. When I think of the environment that a airliner flies in and the forces it must endure during that trip, it leaves me thankful that the designers got it right.
In this picture, I opted to focus on the single point of greatest stress on this 747 during its landing. The main gear has just made contact with the ground, the struts absorbing the brunt of 250-ish tons of weight settling upon them, the wheels staying intact despite the friction and the resulting heat generated from spinning under a plane going 150 kts. It's heady stuff that thousands of flying passengers take for granted each and every day.
