Description
It was 1937 when All American Aviation launched airmail service in an Ohio Valley. Briefly becoming All American Airways in 1949 when they switched to passenger service, it then became Allegheny Airlines four years later.1979 saw a rebranding of US Air, a name that survived until 1996, when US Airways title finally came to be.
The constantly changing name of one of the last legacy carriers is reflective of its rather turbulent history, but one cannot deny that US Airways was a survivor. It had its ups and downs thru the decades, but never succumbed to the whims of the market. Overall, US Airways could be considered a successful company, having absorbed many carriers in its tenure, including PSA, Piedmont, and America West.
But that it the past. With the recent merger with American Airlines, US Airways will soon fade into the past. I thought of that as I took this picture of one of their A320s waiting for takeoff. The darkening skies really set the mood that these days are the twilight ones of US Airways.
