Just because things are not alike does not mean they cannot compliment one other. In the world of commercial aviation, this is especially true, where certain airplanes are judged (maybe unfairly, but who am I to criticize) to be much better at doing a particular job (or at least far better suited for a given route)than their counterparts. And now in a world where it is truly about the bottom line, it is now a common practice where a carrier will take one manufacturer's product for Mission A, and then blend it with another manufacturer's product for Mission B for a harmoniously-economical result
This picture illustrates the practice of bringing two polar opposites together. The A320 and the Boeing 747 are completely a universe apart in what they bring to the table.
