The aluminum sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4" thick wooden frame which is attached to the back. I'll be the first to admit that I've never gotten the appeal of Sanrio characters. Yes, I knew of Hello Kitty, but until recently, knowing the best known character in the Sanrio lineup is about as far as I could get. I do know that if that fact was revealed with me standing in the middle of Tokyo-proper, there'd be a strong chance that I might be run out of the city! ;)
Sanrio is HUGE in Japan, and tremendously popular elsewhere. One of the shining examples of "Kawaii" (the quality of "cute" in Japanese culture), it is a multi-billion dollar company that caters to the crowds that want "adorable". "Hello Kitty", developed in 1974, remains it's anchor character - on her 40th anniversary, she was estimated to be worth 7 billion along, all without advertising.
