Description
Commercial airliners are usually bright aircraft. It's an age old practice that makes sense since a brightly colored plane will draw the eye. White is the predominant base color, although other vivid tones are popular. There are even lime green airliners crisscrossing the globe; no matter what anyone might think, such a color is sure to get attention.
So much so is that formula in use that, quite surprisingly, the inverse practice of a very DARK airliner stands out from the crowd. Air New Zealand was the first to try, painting the fuselage of six of their planes virtually all-black (in homage to that country's rugby team, the All Blacks)! In spite of the Maori symbol and Silver Fern that were ultimately adopted as standard throughout the fleet, these aircraft remain memorable for their black appearance in a typical brightly colored crowd.
ZK-OKQ remains the largest airliner to decked out in the dark color, and it is indeed as striking as the hype makes it out to be. Known as the NZ Rugby Union Livery, I named it partially for the team that it honors and partially for the fact that it's a beautiful airliner to behold. "Blacks' Beauty' seemed to hit the right note.
