Description
Of the whole 767 family, the -300ER series is without a doubt the most popular. Better than half of the 1,040 examples of Boeing's first twin-engine wide body are of this specific variety. From an business standpoint, it's not hard to understand what made it so much more attractive than it's siblings - it's blend of range (a typical city pair would be San Francisco to Paris) and passenger capacity (plus 20% over the baseline variant) filled many an air carrier's niche. A quarter century after introduction, the tremendously successful -300ER continues to run strong, especially in light of the tecnical difficulties it's intended successor, the Dreamliner, is experiencing.
This light casts this particular -300ER in the glory it deserves. After nine hours in the air, this 767 sails in for landing with most of it's 221 occupied. Before the 777, you usually needed a third (and perhaps a fourth) engine to get that kind of performance. When you consider that this was the plane that served as a starting point for designing the 777 and the 787, you've got to give it it's due recognition for having struck the sweet spot.
